The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®

A movement system comprised of two modalities - the Gyrotonic & the Gyrokinesis methods. Both methods aim to lengthen and strengthen the entire body while decompressing the spine and other joints. The circular, flowing movements enhance mobility, posture, strength and resilience, and provide an overall sense of well-being. The Gyrotonic method uses specialized equipment to assist the body, while the Gyrokinesis method is simply done with a stool and mat. At MoveWell we teach both methods to our students.

The GYROTONIC® Method

The Gyrotonic method is a holistic approach to movement that is designed to meet the needs of people of all ages and abilities. Students of the method range from those recovering from injury to elite and professional athletes. The Gyrotonic method of exercise stretches and strengthens muscles, while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body thus increasing range of motion, coordination and decompressing the spine and other joints. The Gyrotonic exercises are performed on the Pulley Tower and a variety of specialized equipment designed by the method's creator Juliu Horvath. The system is fully adjustable and can meet the needs of many people with varying body types and levels of strength. The constant hydraulic-like resistance in the handle unit and pulley tower completely eliminates the jarring that takes place at the beginning and end of exercises performed on conventional exercise equipment, when many injuries occur. The additional specialized pieces of equipment take the Gyrotonic method to the next level and provide a variety of sports specific conditioning. The exercises, synchronized with corresponding breathing patterns, enhance aerobic and cardiovascular stimulation and promote neuromuscular rejuvenation. Unique to the Gyrotonic exercises is the circular, spiraling and undulating movements that increase the functional capacity of the spine and create a spherical and three-dimensional awareness, resulting in total equilibrium.

The GYROKINESIS® Method

Gyrokinesis exercises are the root of the Gyrotonic work but are practiced while on a stool or mat. This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements. These movements stimulate the body's internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements. The movements have been described as dance-like, like moving yoga, as close to swimming as possible without being in water, and as relaxing as tai chi or qi gong. You’ll experience movement spherically and the exercises can be done sitting, standing or on the floor. The exercises are fun, rhythmic and playful!
